I am  interim Professor for Computer Graphics and Interactive Systems at the Department of Computer Science, as well as senior researcher at the Institute for Visual Computing, Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences. Since the mid-nineties, I have been working in the field of augmented and virtual reality, working at various institutions in Germany (Fraunhofer, Bauhaus-University Weimar) and Austria (TU Graz, CURE). My focus is on the human-factors driven analysis, design and validation of 3D user interfaces. My research encompasses performance-driven interfaces for cognitively, perceptually or physically demanding situations, as well as experience-driven interfaces that focus on the design of novel techniques and metaphors by exploring the potential of the human sensorimotor system. Systems include traditional 2D wall / projection systems, immersive 3D systems and mobile AR setups. I am also the co-author of the book 3D User Interfaces: Theory and Practice, together with Joseph LaViola, Ryan McMahan, Doug Bowman and Ivan Poupyrev (Addison-Wesley, 2017).

My research is concerned with the development of novel 3D user interfaces (3DUIs) for virtual and augmented reality (VR & AR).  The field of 3DUIs has gone mainstream, with much interest generated by novel gaming platforms and head-worn display devices. However, interface designers still need to solve a multitude of interesting research challenges: design guidelines are highly needed.  Within my research I focus on a particularly challenging area, namely spatial interaction with complex data. With the increasing complexity of spatial applications – from engineering to medical or even entertainment systems - this is a key issue to be tackled to ensure well performing and engaging interfaces.  Complexity can be defined by information density and change rate, functional scope, but also by the sensory richness permeating data. To interact with complex data, it is often crucial to obtain an accurate understanding of the scene structure, but also to process more detailed object properties. Unfortunately, interaction with complex data is often faced by steep learning curves and limited performance.

In my research, I am trying to solve typical problems occurring in complex applications, including difficulties in judging the exact spatial configuration, visual clutter, constrained fine object interaction in dense scenes, attention issues and an accumulating cognitive load. To tackle these issues, it is not enough to take a higher-level usability or performance view. It is also needed to understand the perceptual and cognitive processes underneath. This understanding helps to optimize how we present information to the user and, subsequently, how the user interacts based on improved spatial awareness.  Yet, these processes are often not focused on sufficiently. 

To extend the level of understanding, it is my goal to study key perceptual and cognitive issues that affect spatial interaction with complex data. My research focuses at the human factors driven analysis, design and validation of multisensory 3DUIs. Doing so, the research is permeated by methods from the area of perceptual user interfaces to improve the understanding of human behavior. Fundamentally, I study how interaction can be advanced by optimizing and enriching the representations at scene and object level. Multisensory interfaces can improve performance through error reduction and correction, allow for more flexible behavior, and support better control of mental resources. I am particularly interested in quantifying the effects of multisensory stimuli on scene and object perception and interpretation. As such, my studies do not only focus on unisensory stimuli, but also how stimuli can be combined to trigger specific sensations to create better performing interfaces. Ultimately, a better understanding will lead to guidelines for designing advanced 3D interfaces that improve interaction with complex data.

MAIN TOPICS
My research encompasses the following highly intertwined research tracks.

> Spatial perception and awareness: ease processing of spatial information at scene level.
I study how users capture and process the scene’s spatial information and how this process can be improved by changing or enriching the representation. Thereby I also look at the way we receive motion cues while navigating through the scene to ease the making of spatial judgments.

> Physical feedback: ease object interaction by providing detailed object-level feedback. I design interfaces that embed physical object stimuli to extend scene and motion-driven cues. I study how enriched object information affects fine object manipulation, and look at perceptual effects that may occur between different sensory channels. 

> Modeling and analysis: create a model to structure and interconnect the perceptual and cognitive studies, advance analysis through perceptual user interface methods like bio-signal and eye tracking. These methods are used  for analysis, but can also drive interaction directly.
